“Without warning a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The Disciples went and woke Him saying “Lord save us, we are going to drown.” (Matthew 8:23-27)
Even though the disciples had witnessed many miracles in the past, they panicked in the storm. Sounds like someone I know… (finger pointing at myself!)
I don’t know about you, but I find myself panicking in the storm a lot lately!
- How often (even more so in recent times) do I look at the circumstances around me before I look to God?
- How often do I panic first and turn to God second?
- How often do I think Jesus is asleep when I need Him?
During these unprecedented times, it is easy for panic, worry and doubt to creep into our minds and hearts. It’s easy to read news reports rather than reading our Bibles. It’s easy to listen to the doomsday nay-sayers, instead of listening to the Truth of God. And it’s easy to think that Jesus is asleep just as we really need Him the most.
But let me assure you that God is not asleep! He is sitting on the Throne, as He was, and is, and will be forever. Like Jesus in the storm, God is not phased, He is not surprised, and He definitely has it all under control. With one command God can still the wind and the waves, and with one command He can still our hearts.
Take a deep breath and allow God to be God. Give your worries over to Him and saturate yourself in His Word, His truth and His promises.
I find huge encouragement from the words of Jesus.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
John 14:27
