Did you forget?

Did you Forget?

Have you forgotten what God has said to you? Or perhaps just set it aside for a more convenient time, only to find your promise gathering dust? I’d like to say that the promises God has given me all sit in their rightful places, that they are shiny and dust free, but over and over I hear God say, daughter, did you forget?

“so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.”

Psalm 78:7 (ESV)

I think we will all recall at least one Biblical reference to forgetting the former things, and yet today God reminded me of the times he says to remember.

More than once in his Word God tells his people not to forget what He has done for them. With the Passover and the Exodus He has his people celebrate and rest, after crossing rivers He had them place memorial stones, and prior to the death and resurrection of our saviour Jesus Christ we are giving the Holy Communion, where we ‘do this in remembrance of me’.

It’s funny that, for myself at least, forgetting the former things has proved significantly easier than remembering what God has done, or the promises He has given.

Not all of you will know, but I am an author, the truth is that some days even calling myself an author isn’t easy. I don’t feel like I have ‘succeeded’ as an author, I’m certainly not selling hundreds of thousands of books, and yet, I have done what God has asked me to do. I wrote, I completed, and I self-published a number of my books.

In this current season of my life writing has proven difficult. I struggle to sit down and dedicate the time it deserves, but recently I noticed one thing. Every time writing begins to disappear from my mind, every time other things take its place God says to me, ‘daughter, did you forget?’. This looks like a friend asking me when the next book will be out, while telling me their daughter and her friends are waiting for me to publish or write it. This looks like a friend from church letting me know my author page popped up on their Facebook feed. This looks like a staff member from the local book store asking if I will come and speak to their book group about my journey. ‘Daughter, did you forget?’

Today I want to ask you, what have you forgotten? What dream, nudging, passion, gift, or ability have you forgotten? What do you need to dig out, and dust off? What promise has God given you? Are you waiting for it expectantly? Are you fulfilling your end of the promise? Because I believe that today God is reminding all of us to remember what He has done, and encouraging us to press into the promises He has made.
