A life of meaning

In this day and age of influencers and podcasters, it would seem that a life of meaning is only found in the loud, dramatic, individuals who spend their time in the public eye. It would certainly be easy to believe that, and yet…

I recently attended the funeral of a gentle, quiet man who was a member of my church family, and in his own understated way he proved that being at the centre of our media-driven world is not the only way to live a life of meaning; by that I mean, a life that points to God.

Every time I attend a funeral it’s easy  to see the heartbreak of the loved ones left behind, and yet I am always so blessed to hear about the life that was lived.

One of the key things I noticed at this most recent funeral was how this man  represented God so well through his consistency. He was a man who was known by family, friends, and acquaintances as someone who maintained a high standard across the board. This consistent high standard was shown in the way he worked, in the way he raised his family and the way he loved his wife.

Unlike the modern ‘influencer,’ he didn’t do anything ‘flashy’ with his life, instead, it appeared he made up his life by prioritising God-honouring choices . He chose daily to love, serve and honour his wife. He chose daily to love and raise his children by demonstrating strong Godly values- values that did not change as he aged, nor as they did. He chose daily to honour his clients as he worked in his chosen industry to provide dedicated, high-quality service.

As a child of God, I can only hope that I too will be able to leave behind a legacy that points those who know or hear about me to my Creator. Like the incredible man of God whose life we celebrated recently, I hope I can consistently follow God so that others will be able to observe God’s influence through every season of my life.

Today I encourage you to consider, how can you build a life of meaning, one where God clearly sits at the centre.
