“I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth….” Psalm 121:1
I am currently in Southland, among the mountains on the edge of Fiordland National Park. For a North Islander who usually looks out on the green pastures of the Waikato, and who identifies mountains as Pirongia and Kakepuku, to be amidst this panorama is breath taking. I can spin in a circle and marvel at these snow-covered peaks towering above me on all sides. Consequently, I find myself always looking at them and constantly photographing them.
The other reason I have a thousand photos on my phone, is because the mountains are always changing. I have discovered as I walk the areas at the foot of these mountains, that I gain different perspectives of them. Their outline can change depending on where I am at their base. Often, I can see ridgelines that from another spot maybe hidden from view.
As I quietly thank God for this experience and marvel at His creation, I was reminded of the psalmist who looked to the hills and acknowledged that God keeps us in every way.
This psalm was written by a traveller on a pilgrimage who while still far from his destination, looked to the distant mountains knowing he was under God’s protective care. The travellers gaze did not stop when he looked at the mountains but went beyond them to the God who made them.
Just as there are many facets to the mountains, which change depending on our perspective, and where we stand at their foot, so too there are many facets to God, far more than our finite minds can understand. But what we can ultimately depend 100% on, is God’s faithfulness to keep us.
there are many facets to God
Therefore, we can totally trust Him. God always watches over us. He doesn’t grow tired or weary as we do, and He is not busy doing something else. God is fully in control and fully attentive and invites us to turn to Him for help.
God is fully in control and fully attentive and invites us to turn to Him for help.
Someone once said,” To ask Him to deal with what troubles us each day is like asking a famous surgeon to put iodine on a scratch”.
It seems that while we may ask for help in the big things, we can’t believe that He would watch the soap opera of our daily trials and tribulations, so we purchase our own remedies for that. But God is there for us in those things too. He keeps us. Read the rest of this psalm and see just how much we are loved, wanted and kept by the Creator of the mountains!! Trust Him, because He is true to His Word.
“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. Psalm 61:2
