Connecting with God

Strengthening your personal connection with God

Connection with God

I don’t think it matters what season of life we find ourselves in, we all look for connection with God. But with God not having a physical body often we relegate our ‘God time’, to church on a Sunday and prayer before bed. Today I want to suggest a few other ways you might try to connect with God.

How you could try connecting with God:

Write him a letter, email or a text (you can do this in a word or note file)

  • No really. Write to Him like you’re writing to a penpal, friend, or family member. Tell Him about what’s going on in your life. Tell Him about your dreams. Ask Him how he’s going. Then when you’re done keep your eyes and ears open for a response, you might be surprised by how he chooses to interact with you.

Learn something new about Him.

  • Personally, I enjoy listening to Podcasts that can give me insight to His word.
  • You might enjoy ‘The Bible Binge’ hosted by Jamie Golden, Knox McCoy, and Bible scholar Erin Moon, a podcast that looks at Bible stories through a pop culture lens.
  • Or ‘The Bible Recap’ a series hosted by Tara-Leigh Cobble that works through the Bible chronologically and layers cultural and historical knowledge into the study to provide insight into the times each event happened.

Listen to music about Him.

  • It really doesn’t matter if you’re cooking, cleaning, or doing almost any other activity, there’s something about listening to music with Him as the focus that feels as though you’re spending quality time in his presence.

Pray.

  • And by pray I mean talk to Him. Talk to Him as though He is standing right in front of you. You can do it out loud or in your head, whatever you prefer. The point is to remove the barrier of distance between you. Imagine talking to Him and sharing with Him what you typically share with your favourite person and then do that. He is God, but that doesn’t mean He doesn’t want to know all of you.

Have a meal with Him.

  • You’re likely going to eat anyway. This time you could try setting a seat at the table for God and including Him in the meal.

You’re not the only one looking for connection. God wants connection with you too, and one of the main tools for connection is actually taking the time to spend with the person you’re trying to connect with. I encourage you to set aside some time today to spend with God.
