We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain. Hebrews 6:19
Bigdog’s message on Sunday got me thinking, and I thought of the moto of the Boys Brigade, which I attended as a young guy. The moto being Sure and Steadfast based on Hebrews 6:19.
This verse uses the metaphor of an anchor to describe the believers hope. As an anchor provides stability and security for a ship in a storm, so our hope in God provides stability and security for us in the storms of life. The anchor is described as “sure and steadfast,” emphasizing the reliability and firmness of our hope. This hope is not based on fleeting emotions or human efforts or current circumstances, but on the unchanging character and promises of God.
Back to my Boys Brigade days, there was the “Boys Brigade hymn” known outside the BB world as “Will Your Anchor Hold” that was always sung at BB services and the words of the chorus state:
We have an anchor that keeps the soul,
steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
fastened to the rock which cannot move,
grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!
So no matter what you face, no matter how big the obstacle, no matter how long it’s taking, you know God is still on the throne. You know His plans for you are for good, that He’s bigger than any obstacle, that His favour is surrounding you. Just lower your anchor onto the rock which is the love of Christ Jesus.
